More Pest Trivia

  • To survive the cold winter months, many insects replace their body water with a chemical called glycerol, which acts as an "antifreeze" against the temperatures.
  • All insects have a hard exoskeleton, six jointed legs, two antennae, compound eyes and a body divided into 3 main body sections - a head, thorax and abdomen.
  • Given the list of mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, termites, ticks, spiders, mice/rats, and bees/wasps, mosquitoes were perceived as the most difficult to control among almost half of the respondents (47%).

Damaging Insects

Here's a question for you to ponder... Do ants damage property?

Yes, they do.  Besides ruining human food, some species of ants can damage wood in and around homes.  Carpenter ants, for example, like to make their nests in porches, roofs, windowsills, even telephone poles.

Ants are social insects that prefer nesting in wood. They commonly hollow out galleries or tunnels in trees, structures, wood, and foam insulation. Carpenter ants are often found in conjunction with moisture problems. An indication of possible infestation is evidence of sawdust, pieces of insulation, nesting materials, and winged adults, known as swarmers.

To protect your home against carpenter ants, a seasonal visit program may be the solution. This allows us to get to your home before the wood destroying ants do each year.

So, if you're concerned that you have an ant problem in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

When Should You Call An Exterminator?

Here are a few common questions people ask us...

How do I know if I need extermination? The answer to this question is pretty simple. If you see just a few ants or just one mouse, those few ants or one mouse have a whole bunch of buddies; lurking where you can't see them. If you have even a slightly visible problem then you have a problem. Left untreated, you could have a crisis.

I have a whole bunch of pests and a lot of them. Do you have a solution? If you have a feeling one treatment isn't enough to keep your house pest free, we offer a couple of different options. The service technicians at Dave's Pest Control will come to your home or business, assess the situation, and offer a solution that will fit your needs and your budget.

More Termite FAQs

Close up view of termite swarm
1. When does a homeowner see termites?
Termites swarm in the early spring, depending on their geographical location.

2. What can a homeowner do to prevent termites?
The most important thing is to remove the conducive conditions termites need to survive. Termites love moisture; avoid moisture accumulation around the foundation of your home. Prevent termites by diverting water away with properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks. Reduce humidity in crawl spaces with proper ventilation.

Prevent shrubs, vines and other vegetation from growing over and covering vents. Be sure to remove old form boards, grade stakes, etc., left in place after the building was constructed. Remove old tree stumps and roots around and beneath the building.

Most importantly, eliminate any wood contact with the soil. An 18-inch gap between the soil and wood portions of the building is ideal. It doesn't hurt to routinely inspect the foundation of your home for signs of termite damage.

3. How are termites controlled?
Dave's Pest Control will come in and treat the problem so that you can live comfortably in your home.

4. What is the most effective type of termite treatment?
Dave's Pest Control committed to providing highly effective treatment options for all pest issues. The most effective type of treatment depends upon the severity of the infestation, the species of termite, and the location and construction of the home or building. Dave will assess each infestation separately and recommend a rigorous treatment plan that will effectively control the termite population.

5. How difficult are termites to treat?
Termites are nearly impossible for homeowners to treat on their own. On the other hand, Dave's Pest Control has the training, expertise and technology to eliminate termite infestations.

Did You Know...

Pest trivia...because you never know when "Who Wants To be A Milliionaire" may call you!
  • Unlike many other insects, all of the periodical cicadas in an area emerge from the nymph stage as a full-grown winged adult at once.
  • Over 5 million children are sensitive to cockroaches.
  • A queen bee can lay her weight in eggs each day, laying 1 per minute, all day and all night, for a total of 1,500 eggs in 24 hours, and 200,000 in a year.

Unsure About Pest Control Services?

If you've never used a pest control service before, here are a few answers to some commonly asked questions.

What are your environmentally sound alternatives? We use state-of-the-art, low toxicity chemicals that are much less harmful to people, pets, and their environments than what is currently offered by the majority of the pest control market.

Will I have to leave the premises? Because we use low toxicity chemicals, you can usually stay home during the treatment. Flea and spider treatments require you to leave for 2-3 hours. Roaches, ants, mice, termites, and just about everything else can be taken care of while you're relaxing on the living room couch.

What about pets and children? Children need to leave during the treatment and may return 2-3 hours after completion. We ask that during treatments, you either put your pets in a room that is not being treated or remove them from the structure until the materials we have used are dry. Fish tanks need to be covered.

Do the chemicals you use have a real bad odor? Another great benefit of low toxicity chemicals is virtually odorless pest control. No longer do you need to be reminded that you received extermination by a nasty, lingering odor.

If you have any other questions or would like more detailed information, visit our web site Dave's Pest Control or call Dave at 1-800-400-6009.

Deer Mice

The deer mouse makes its home outdoors in sheltered areas such as hollow tree logs or piles of debris. On the rare occasions the deer mouse comes indoors, it prefers undisturbed areas such as attics. You may also want to check under the hood of your car. Deer mice love to build "winter condos" there.

The deer mouse transmits the potentially fatal Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. The disease can be transmitted through contact with mouse carcasses, or by breathing in aerosolized urine droplets of infected deer mice.
Prevention:

To keep mice and other rodents out, make sure all holes of larger diameter than a pencil are sealed. Mice can squeeze through spaces as small as a nickel. Seal any cracks and voids. Don't overlook proper drainage at the foundation and always install gutters or diverts which will channel water away from the building. Use heavy gloves and protective breathing gear when working in an area populated by deer mice.

If you're concerned that you have deer mice in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

When Should Termite Work Be Done? - Part 2

Home sellers are wise to order a termite inspection report before they market their home. Select a termite inspector the same way you would any contractor. Ask several people who recently had termite work done if they would use the inspector again. If you had your home inspected fairly recently consider using the same contractor, unless you had a bad experience. In some states, termite inspectors don't contract to do repair work. In other states, most structural pest control companies do both the inspecting and the repair work. If you're using the same company to do the inspection and the work, be sure to talk to several people who had work done by the company.

A good inspector might not have the best work crews. In this case, you might want to use one company to do the inspection and another to do the repair work. If you're having trouble getting good recommendations, ask an experienced local real estate agent.

Make sure to use a termite company that specializes in your area. "Termite" problems tend to vary from one area to the next. So you should rely on a pest control contractor who is an expert in your location.Sellers who are not planning on selling immediately should consider having termite repairs completed before they market their home for sale. Sometimes completing the termite repairs in advance will have the added benefit of improving the home's appearance -- if a deck is rotted or a bathroom linoleum floor is shot. The house will show better and you'll have a clean bill of health from the termite company to pass along to the buyers.

When Should Termite Work Be Done? - Part 1

Termite work is a generic term. It refers to repair work done in a home to correct infestation or damage from wood pest organisms such as dry rot, fungus, termites (of which there are various kinds), wood-boring beetles and carpenter ants, to name a few.

Typically, buyers have homes inspected before they buy so that they are well-informed about the condition of the property. Of the many inspections a buyer might order, a "termite" report is a virtual certainty.

Local custom usually dictates who pays to correct wood pest damage during the course of a home sale. Sellers often pay to repair damage and infestation that developed during their period of ownership. Buyers usually take responsibility for items called in a report that are not active problems but that could become a problem in the future, like a tub that needs caulking.

Home sellers are wise to order a termite inspection report before they market their home. In areas where sellers pay to correct termite repairs, a pre-sale report lets sellers know how much they can expect to pay. It also provides information to the buyers that they will certainly want before purchasing the home.

If you're concerned about termites in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Pest Health Threats - Part 6

Ants are social insects. Therefore, spotting one ant unfortunately signifies there are many more to follow. Ants are not simply unsightly – they can also be dangerous contaminates to food. Considering that you likely eat multiple meals a day in your home, the presence of ants and the potential for food contamination from their presence is an issue that must be addressed when considering your health and the health of your family.

If you have an ant infestation, be sure to take action to treat the problem and contact Dave's Pest Control to aid you in preventing future infestations.

Pest Health Threats - Part 5

Fleas aren’t just a problem for man’s best friend. These pests, which commonly appear in warmer months, feed on the blood of any warm-blooded body. Typically biting human beings, fleas can cause itchy, unsightly marks as well as severe allergic reactions.

Fleas tend to catch a ride with mammals on the move, which can include not only you and your pet but also rodents. If you have a rodent problem in your home, fleas may be soon to follow.

If you suspect a flea infestation, be proactive in treating the problem and contact Dave's Pest Control to rid your home of fleas and to prevent future infestations.

Pest Health Threats - Part 4

Lyme disease has emerged, in recent years, as a major health risk to human beings. Transmitted by ticks, typically between May and October, lyme disease is largely found in the Northeastern, upper mid-western Western states of the U.S. However, there has been an increase in the diagnosed cases of lyme disease in the South.

If you have fruit-bearing trees, particularly apples trees on your property, you most likely have deer visiting your backyard each night. Ticks love hitching a ride on these gentle creatures.

It is critical to be vigilant of ticks, especially if you are in wooded areas. Symptoms of Lyme disease include a "bull's eye" rash around the bite, flu-like symptoms and extreme fatigue.

If you're concerned that you have ticks around your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Bed Bug Precautions

With news reports of clothing stores being shut down due to bed bug infestations, here are a few precautions you should take when buying new clothing, including socks, underwear, even sheets and towels...
  • Do not place newly purchased garments or other cloth items in the closet or drawers.
  • Place articles in the dryer for at least 20 minutes. The heat will kill them and their eggs.
Remember, it does not matter what the price range is of the clothing, or if the outfit comes from a high-end store. These items often arrive in shipments from other countries where precautions are not taken.

Of course, if you're concerned that you have bed bugs in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Pest Health Threats - Part 2

Stinging insects send more than 500,000 people to the emergency room each year. These pests are aggressive in nature and often sting as a way to protect their colonies or larvae from human beings who attempt to remedy an infestation on their own.

This aggressiveness, combined with being disturbed, often means that these pests tend to sting repeatedly, which adds to the potential for greater skin irritation or a serious allergic reaction.

At Dave's Pest Control,
we provide a level of expertise and knowledge of technology that can best rid these stinging insects and prevents future infestations.

If you're concerned that you have stinging insects nesting around your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.
