Autumn Pests Are Coming...Part One

Autumn is only a few weeks away, so now is the time to prepare and guard against those biting and stinging pests.
As cooler weather becomes more routine and many insects species have reached their annual population zenith, we see significant surges of activity from fleas, ticks, crickets, ants, spiders, and more.

This is the time of year, too, where numerous instances of yellow jackets and hornets are sited around homes. Any observed entrance and exit locations should not be sealed as this will trap them in the wall. They will bore holes through interior walls to escape and enter your home.

If you're concerned about these biting and stinging pest at your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Did You Know . . .

Most people believe stinging insects must be physically provoked to attack and sting. However, stinging insects, especially wasps, do not have to be physically touched/provoked to attack and sting.

These pests must only feel that they or their colony is threatened, which can simply happen when a human gets too close.

Stinging insects send over half million visitors to hospital emergency rooms every year.

About Stinging Insects

Stinging insects are most active in the summer and early fall when their nest populations exceed 60,000. Some 500,000 people are sent to the hospital emergency room every year due to stings from insects such as yellow jackets, honeybees, paper wasps, hornets and fire ants.

"Stinging insects pose a major health concern for families around the country, and these are the months when you are at the greatest risk," says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. "It is important to take certain precautions to ensure that you are not their next victim."
Experts at NPMA offer numerous tips for preventing stinging insects and treating stings:
  • Hire a trained pest professional to destroy hives and nests around the home.
  • Eliminate standing water and other sources of moisture in or around the home.
  • Keep trashcans covered and sealed.
  • When dining outside, keep food covered until ready to eat.
  • If approached by a stinging insect, remain calm and quiet. Avoid swaying or swinging, as this may provoke an attack.
  • Avoid wearing dark colors and floral prints, loose-fitting garments, open-toe shoes and sweet-smelling perfumes or colognes.

How To Identify the Pest, the Nest and the Threat - Yellowjackets

The Pest: Yellowjackets . . .

Yellowjackets have a yellow and black color pattern and are between 3/8 – 5/8 inches.

The nest: Yellowjackets live in nests constructed of paper carton, which can grow to be basketball-sized. One nest will contain a number of rounded paper combs, attached one below another and covered with a many-layered envelope. Depending on the species, the nest may be near the ground, such as on plant roots, logs or timber, or aerial and attached to shrubs, bushes, houses, garages or sheds.

The threat: Yellowjackets are slow to sting, unless their nests is threatened.Yellowjackets are considered beneficial insects because they control many pest insect species. However, if their nest is located near a structure, control is warranted.

Remember, it is not advised to attempt to remove a stinging insect nest on your own, and doing so can be extremely dangerous. Instead, work with a licensed pest professional to access your property and the nest to determine the best way to eliminate the threat to your family.

The above information was provided by Missy Henriksen, Vice President of Public Affairs, NPMA Executive Director, Professional Pest Management Alliance.

Open Pipe Mud Daubers

This group of wasps gets its common name from the fact that they construct their nest of mud. Mud daubers are found throughout the United States.

Mud daubers are solitary wasps. They are not social and do not live in colonies. Mud daubers provision spiders for their larvae by paralyzing them with their venom and bringing them into their nests.

Mud daubers do not defend their nests and only rarely sting. They are typically considered nuisance pests, and are actually beneficial as they help control spiders. Although mud daubers are not typically dangerous, their nests should be removed by a pest management professional if found on your property, as their abandoned nests are often adopted by other more dangerous wasp species.

If you're concerned that you have mud daubers, wasps, or other stinging insects in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Pest Health Threats - Part 2

Stinging insects send more than 500,000 people to the emergency room each year. These pests are aggressive in nature and often sting as a way to protect their colonies or larvae from human beings who attempt to remedy an infestation on their own.

This aggressiveness, combined with being disturbed, often means that these pests tend to sting repeatedly, which adds to the potential for greater skin irritation or a serious allergic reaction.

At Dave's Pest Control,
we provide a level of expertise and knowledge of technology that can best rid these stinging insects and prevents future infestations.

If you're concerned that you have stinging insects nesting around your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Summer Offering

All the rain and the bouts of hot and humid weather are ideal conditions for many summer insects. That's why we offer our customers seasonal pest control plans. Here is what the summer brings...

Pests: All of the new beginnings from spring have come to full bloom in the summer for pest activity. The maximum activity puts more pressure on our homes as the insects are seeking more favorable living conditions for food, moisture, lower temperatures, harborage, etc. All of these can be quickly found in our homes.

Stinging Insects: The predators of the insect world (scorpions, spiders, centipedes, etc.) follow their prey into our homes during this increased activity. They enter through cracks, crevices, damaged areas around our doors, windows, eaves, weep holes, plumbing penetrations, electrical/utility connections, etc. They are not seeking us, but interaction between people and these "stinging" insects is inevitable when we share the same living space.

If you're concerned about the summer pests in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.
