A "Mischief"

Did you know that a group of rats is called a "mischief?" And did you know that there is an Indian temple, overrun with rats, where people go to pray with the rats who they believe to be deceased loved ones reincarnated as these rodents?

Whether it is the man on "Hoarders" living with 2500 rats, or NPMA expert Greg Baumann discussing the love-hate relationship with rats on The History Channel's Modern Marvels, those creatures do hold a fascination for us. (Well, some of us!)

However, it is important to remember that rats do pose health threats. Rats are vectors of disease, often contaminating food, and can cause many serious illnesses and diseases in human beings.

If you're concerned that you have rats in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

When Should Termite Work Be Done? - Part 3

Sellers who have a presale inspection done just before listing their home for sale usually wait until the home sells to have the work done. Homes don't show at their best while work is in progress. Also, some buyers would prefer to take a monetary credit at closing for the termite repairs and complete the work themselves after closing.

The buyer's lender may require a notice of completion from the termite company indicating that the property is free of any active infestation or damage. If this is the case, the termite work can be done after a buyer for the home is found but before the sale closes.

The Closing: Homeowners are advised to have termite inspections completed every couple of years. Periodic repairs should be completed so that minor problems don't turn into major defects.

Pest Health Threats - Part 7

Rodents can enter a building through almost any opening or crack. It is important to inspect for rodent droppings, especially in undisturbed areas such as pantries, under baseboards and along walls.

Rodent droppings most often cause allergic reactions in human beings but can also cause disease, including the potentially deadly Hantavirus. More frequently, though, rodents serve as vectors, carrying bacteria, such as salmonella, on their bodies and contaminating food sources, kitchen surfaces and equipment.

Dave's Pest Control can offer the expertise and knowledge of rodent biology to best protect your health and rid your home or business of a rodent infestation.

More About Cockroaches

Cockroaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms, and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. They can pick up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies as they crawl through decaying matter or sewage and then carry these into food or onto food surfaces. Germs that cockroaches eat from decaying matter or sewage are protected while in their bodies and may remain infective for several weeks longer than if they had been exposed to cleaning agents, rinse water, or just sunlight and air.

Recent medical studies have shown that cockroach allergens cause lots of allergic reactions in inner city children. They were even shown to cause asthma in children. These allergens build up in deposits of droppings, secretions, cast skins, and dead bodies of roaches.

Good sanitation and habitat reduction, along with vacuuming, surveillance, a baiting program, and some sealing of cracks can usually quickly reduce or eliminate a cockroach population.

If you're concerned that you have cockroaches in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Brown Banded Cockroaches

Brown banded cockroaches get their name from the two lighter bands they have across their dark brownish bodies. In addition to the distinctive banding, males have full wings, which reach beyond the tip of their rather pointed abdomens, but females have underdeveloped wings, much shorter than their broad, rounded abdomens. The lighter band markings are much more distinct in nymphs than in adults of either sex.

Within a room, these roaches tend to prefer warmer, drier, and higher locations than do any of the other urban pest roaches. They are often found in upper cabinets or in other rooms than the kitchens (food preparation areas) or bathrooms.

If you're concerned that you have cockroaches in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Prepare Now For WInter Pests

Although most customers see a reduction in pest activity during winter, it does not mean the problem is gone! With the mild climate, pests are just more reclusive during the winter months.

Rodents:
Rodent activity in our homes significantly increases. The comensel rodents (house mouse, roof rat and Norway rat) are driven to seek warmer shelter with food and water sources. Our homes provide all of these needs.

Pests:
Numerous pests we see during the rest of the year "over winter" to hibernate or pupate in our attics, crawl spaces, wall voids, under exterior siding, etc. Many of these pests (cluster flies, ladybugs, boxleder bugs, stink bugs, yellow jackets, etc.) are finding a safe and warm place in winter so they can start all over again in spring.

If you're concerned about insects or rodents "wintering" in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Meadow Voles

The Meadow Vole, sometimes called the Field Mouse or Meadow Mouse, is a small North American vole found across Canada, Alaska and the northern United States. Its range extends further south along the Atlantic coast. One subspecies, the Florida Salt Marsh Vole is found only in Florida, and is classified as endangered. It is also found in Chihuahua, Mexico.

The Meadow Vole is active year-round, usually at night. It also digs underground burrows where it stores food for the winter and females give birth to their young. Although these animals tend to live close together, they are aggressive towards one other. This is particularly evident in males during the breeding season. It can cause damage to fruit trees, garden plants and commercial grain crops.

If you're concerned that you have voles around your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

The Western Conifer Seed Bug

The western conifer seed bug is a nuisance, occasional invader that has been moving eastward from the West Coast. This insect feeds mainly on seeds and developing cones of conifers. It was first detected in Pennsylvania in 1992.  Its range now extends across the northern U.S. and into Canada.  Interstate commerce is the main factor thought to be involved in its spread.

This occasional invading nuisance pest must come inside to overwinter.  That's when people notice them entering homes and office spaces.  Much like other overwintering pests, the late fall is when they pests will move indoors through cracks and crevices, under eaves and doors, and through weep holes.  And like other occasional invaders, they will rest on the southwest side of the building in late summer months into the fall and work their way toward doors and windows.

The adults are about ¾ of an inch long and brownish on top.  The upper abdomen is orange with five transverse black stripes.  Eggs (2mm) are laid in chains on conifer needles.  Nymphs are reddish brown as they molt from stage to stage and there is one generation per season.  A distinguishing feature of this bug is the larger tibia portion of the leg common to leaf footed bugs.  Another of note is the loud buzzing noise it makes while flying - the sound resembles that of a bumble bee and can be startling to clients.  But, this insect does not bite or sting humans.

To combat their entry you may want to offer to replace loose fitting screens, add door sweeps, caulk any gaps around utility pipe chases, caulk around chimneys and under fascia as well as screen chimneys, attic and wall vents.  Once inside, they will be more active on sunny days and they tend to harbor in voids on cooler or colder days throughout the winter.  When seen on active warmer days, you may recommend that they be vacuumed up and removed.  (The vacuum bag should be frozen first to kill them.)

In the spring they will attempt to get back outdoors to feed and lay their eggs on pineneedles.  They actually do a good bit of economic damage to the quality and viability of conifer seed crops and contribute to a substantial loss of Douglas fir seeds.  It is assumed they will also cause economic damage and impact over time to conifers native throughout the northern U.S. and Canada.

If you're concerned that you have western conifer seed bugs in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

How Well Do You Know Your Pests?

Think you know a lot about pests? Here's a quick little quiz to test your pest knowledge!
  1. What pest has fossils dating back to the dinosaurs?
  2. What pest can live without food?
  3. What pest can jump the highest compared to its body size?
 Scroll down for the answers.
Dave's Pest Control
http://www.davespestcontrol.net

1. Cockroaches have fossils that date back 350 million years. These ancient insects walked on the earth long before humans. Dating back to the dinosaurs, cockroaches have six legs, wings and antennae.

2. Yup!  The answer is cockroaches yet again.  Cockroaches can live for a month without any food, but they can only live for two weeks without water.

3. Fleas — these tiny insects can jump 150 times as high as their body length. They like to live on cats, dogs, humans and rodents. Jumping from animal to animal, these pests are attracted to their new homes by body heat.

Protect Your Clothing From Fabric Pests

Dave's Pest Control can rid your home of these fabric pests like moths and carpet beetles, but there are a few steps you can take to protect your clothing until your fabric pest problem can be controlled.

Clothes moth larvae are especially damaging to fabric that has been stained or soiled. Actually, there is evidence that clothes moth larvae will not develop on clean fabric because it lacks certain necessary nutrients. So, always launder or dry clean clothes before putting them into long-term storage.

Do not store boxes of clothes in the attic, garage or basement, if possible. If clothing must be stored in boxes, thoroughly clean the boxes before storage and seal all corners and openings with tape. Prior to storage, clean woolen and natural fiber clothing according to the manufacturer's instructions. In closets, store natural fiber clothing items by covering them with individual plastic covers.

Consider storing clothing in large zippered plastic units. Use mothballs to help deter fabric pests, but be aware that they may leave an odor that could require dry cleaning.

When To Call An Exterminator - Part 2

Here are a few common questions people ask us...

What are your environmentally sound alternatives? We use state-of-the-art, low toxicity chemicals that are much less harmful to people, pets, and their environments than what is currently offered by the majority of the pest control market.

Will I have to leave the premises? Because we use low toxicity chemicals, you can usually stay home during the treatment. Flea and spider treatments require you to leave for 2-3 hours. Roaches, ants, mice, termites, and just about everything else can be taken care of while you're relaxing on the living room couch.

What about pets and children? Children need to leave during the treatment and may return 2-3 hours after completion. We ask that during treatments, you either put your pets in a room that is not being treated or remove them from the structure until the materials we have used are dry. Fish tanks need to be covered.

Do the chemicals you use have a real bad odor? Another great benefit of low toxicity chemicals is virtually odorless pest control. No longer do you need to be reminded that you received extermination by a nasty, lingering odor.

If you have any other questions or would like more detailed information, visit our web site Dave's Pest Control or call Dave at 1-800-400-6009.

Spring -- When A Lot Of What Bugs You Comes Back To Life

Spring is the time of year we think of renewed life, flowers, rain showers, and warmer days, this is also the time of year our activity springs to new beginnings. Almost all pest activity significantly increases.

Termites: Although termites are active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, they are most evident during the spring swarm. This is when the winged reproductives (Alates) emerge in large numbers to reproduce and start new colonies. These silent destroyers, cause more damage and destruction to our homes and property each year than do all of the fires and storms combined annually.

Other Pests: This is the time of year when all of your "over-wintering" pests emerge from their hiding places to reproduce. Carpenter ants start swarming (another wood destroying insect). Also, the fire ants, wasps, pill bugs, millipedes, earwigs, mites, spiders, scorpions, silverfish, roaches, etc. become more active and populations significantly increase.

The service technicians at Dave's Pest Control will come to your home or business, assess the situation, and offer a solution that will fit your needs and your budget.

When To Call An Exterminator - Part 1

Here are a few common questions people ask us...

How do I know if I need extermination? The answer to this question is pretty simple. If you see just a few ants or just one mouse, those few ants or one mouse have a whole bunch of buddies; lurking where you can't see them. If you have even a slightly visible problem then you have a problem. Left untreated, you could have a crisis.

I have a whole bunch of pests and a lot of them. Do you have a solution? If you have a feeling one treatment isn't enough to keep your house pest free, we offer a couple of different options. The service technicians at Dave's Pest Control will come to your home or business, assess the situation, and offer a solution that will fit your needs and your budget.

    Our Family Protecting Your Family

Our Family Protecting Your Family... That's our tag line.
At Dave's Pest Control we not only keep your family safe from the hazards of pest infestations, we protect your home too.

Buying a new home may be the biggest investment you’ll ever make. Protecting your home from unwanted pests is the first step in protecting that investment. Pest management has become a major industry in helping preserve the value of your home. On average, termites cause over $2 billion in damages each year, and homeowner's insurance may not cover this damage.

The first step to effective pest management is defining the factors which limit the reproduction and survival potential of each pest. For instance, removing the food, water and shelter of pests have a very significant impact on controlling pest populations by itself. Coupled with appropriate chemical control measures, a longer lasting, more significant impact is made.

That's where the knowledge, training, and years of experience help identify and administer the appropriate actions to maximize pest control. So if  you think a problem may be lurking in your home, give me a call at 1-800-400-6009.  I'm happy to help.  -- Dave

    Welcome To Our Blog!

My goal with this blog is to provide information and an interesting, even entertaining, perspective about the pest control industry. So, to get started, let me share a little history about how my family-owned business got started.

Dave's Pest Control has been in business in the Worcester area since 1972 when my father, Dave Penttila, Sr. started the company with little more than a handshake and a prayer.

Today, Dave's Pest Control is still family owned and operated. Our mission is still the same -- to providing the same superior customer service and products as always, and to set the standard of superior service in the Pest Management Industry that exceeds customers' expectations. Our residential and commercial clients enjoy prompt, personal service that only an independent operator can consistently provide.

I am very proud that many of our current regular service clients are original customers from the early years. I am thankful, too, that our customers feel confident when referring their friends and family to us.
