How To Identify the Pest, the Nest and the Threat - Paper Wasps

The Pest: Paper Wasps . . .

Paper wasps are brownish with yellow or reddish markings.

The nest: Paper wasps get their name from the paper-like material of which they construct their nest. Paper wasp nests are often umbrella-like in shape and are never enclosed in an envelope. Nests are often found hanging from twigs and branches of trees and shrubs, as well as porch ceilings, door frames, eaves, deck floor joints, railings, etc.

The threat: If a nest is touched, there is a high probability you will get stung, although paper wasps are typically not aggressive. Paper wasps are considered beneficial insects because they control many pest insect species. However, if their nest is located near a structure, control is warranted.

It's Enough They Crawl, But Jump?

The Jumping Spider get its name from its jumping ability used to capture prey. They are an occasional nuisance pest indoors, and some colored species may cause concern when people mistake them for Black Widow spiders. About 300 species of jumping spiders are found in the United States and Canada.

Compact with relatively short leg, jumping spiders are usually black, although sometimes brown, tan, or gray, with pale markings of white, gray, yellow, red, blue and/or green. They are typically covered with hairs or scales, often brightly colored.

Jumping spiders do not construct snare webs but do build web retreats which are loosely woven, saclike, composed of several envelopes and usually have two openings. Unlike most spiders, jumping spiders are active during the daytime and seem to like sunshine.

They are hunters and have the keenest vision of all spiders, being able to detect and react to movement up to 18” in distance; however their night vision is very poor. They can rapidly move both sideways and backwards for short distances. As their name implies, they are excellent jumpers.

More About Cockroaches

Cockroaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms, and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. They can pick up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies as they crawl through decaying matter or sewage and then carry these into food or onto food surfaces. Germs that cockroaches eat from decaying matter or sewage are protected while in their bodies and may remain infective for several weeks longer than if they had been exposed to cleaning agents, rinse water, or just sunlight and air.

Recent medical studies have shown that cockroach allergens cause lots of allergic reactions in inner city children. They were even shown to cause asthma in children. These allergens build up in deposits of droppings, secretions, cast skins, and dead bodies of roaches.

Good sanitation and habitat reduction, along with vacuuming, surveillance, a baiting program, and some sealing of cracks can usually quickly reduce or eliminate a cockroach population.

About Hornets

Hornets are the largest eusocial wasps, that reach up to 45 millimeters (1.8 inches) in length. The true hornets make up the genus Vespa, and are distinguished from other vespines by the width of the vertex (part of the head behind the eyes), which is proportionally larger in Vespa; and by the anteriorly rounded gasters (the section of the abdomen behind the wasp waist).

A hornet's sting is painful to humans, but the sting toxicity varies greatly by hornet species. Some deliver just a typical insect sting, while others are among the most venomous known insects. Allergic reactions, fatal in severe cases, can occur an individual suffering from anaphylactic shock may die unless treated immediately via epinephrine ("adrenaline") injection using a device such as an EpiPen, with prompt followup treatment in a hospital.

Nectar So Sweet

Honeybees are extremely beneficial insects due to their role in pollination. It is estimated that honeybees pollinate more than 100 crops in the U.S.

Honeybees produce honey from pollen and nectar of the plants they pollinate. They store the honey in honeycombs in their nests. The honey they produce not only feeds their young in colder months, but provides humans with a tasty nectar.

Honeybees often build their nests in tree crevices, but will occasionally build nests in attics or chimneys. Removal of a honeybee nest and the honey product can be very messy, therefore their removal should be addressed by a professional. Because honeybee colonies are so large, only a pest control professional or experienced beekeeper can safely remove a honeybee nest.

Those Pesky Little Flies

Fruit flies are small pests that are commonly found in homes, restaurants and other facilities where food is processed. They are found on moist, decaying matter that has been stationary for several days.

Fruit flies are found in unsanitary conditions, so they are a potential heath concern, especially when present in health facilities.

Indian Meal Moth

The Indian meal moth was given its name after an insect scientist found it feeding on corn meal, also known as Indian meal. From wing tip to wing tip, adult moths measure from five-eighths of an inch to three-fourths of an inch long.

These moths like to feed on dried fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, chocolate, candies, bird seed, dog food, powdered milk, dried red peppers and candy.

Prevention: Dried food products should be inspected thoroughly for signs of moth infestations. Discard infested foods in outdoor trash bins. Clean infested cupboards thoroughly with a vacuum and soap and water. Store food in sealed containers.

Yuck! That Stinks!

That's right....crush one of those little pests and the smell is quite unpleasant. Hence the name: the Stink Bug. Originally found in East Asia, Stink Bugs made their first reported appearance in the United States in the late 1990s. They get their name because release an unpleasant odor when you crush them or when they are protecting their homes.

Stink bugs eat leaves, flowers, fruit and crops like soybeans. They also eat other pests, such as caterpillars. And while they do not harm humans, they can cause a lot of damage to crops and plants.

To prevent stink bug infestations around your home:

• Seal cracks around your house
• Replace damaged screen on doors and windows
• If you see a stink bug indoors vacuum them up and throw away the bag immediately
• Keep weeds around the garden in control and clean up the garden at the end of the growing season
• Hand pick stink bugs in early morning when they are slow moving

Japanese Beetles

As the name suggests, the Japanese beetle is native to Japan. The insect was first found in the United States in 1916 in a nursery near Riverton, New Jersey. It is thought that beetle larvae entered the United States in a shipment of iris bulbs prior to 1912 when inspections of commodities entering the country began.

During the larval stage, the Japanese beetle lives in lawns and other grasslands, where it eats the roots of grass. During that stage, it is susceptible to a fatal disease called milky spore disease, caused by a bacterium called milky spore.

Japanese beetles feed on a large range of hosts, including leaves of plants of the following: strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, grapes, hops, roses, cherries, plums, pears, peaches, raspberries, blackberries, corn, peas, and blueberries.

What's That Buzz...

It's a lovely summer afternoon and your planning a nice luncheon out on the porch with friends. All is going well until...You hear them coming, like a squadron of kamikazes....

House flies get their name from being the most common fly found around homes. Adult house flies can grow to one-quarter of an inch long and usually live between 15 and 25 days. They tend to stay within 1-2 miles of where they were born; however, they have been known to migrate up to 20 miles to find food.
House flies can only feed on liquids, but have the ability to turn many solid foods into a liquid for them to eat. House flies taste with their feet, which are 10 million times more sensitive to sugar than the human tongue.

These insects have been known to carry over 100 different kinds of disease-causing germs, which makes them very bad house guests.

Here are a few tips to keep house flies at bay:

• Be vigilant about sanitation
• Remove trash regularly and use well-sealing garbage receptacles
• Clean up pet waste immediately
• Use fine mesh screens on doors and windows to prevent fly entry

Earwigs

Earwigs, sometimes called pincerbugs, have the characteristic pair of forceps-like pincers on their abdomen. These nocturnal insects often hide in small, moist crevices. c tables, compost and waste bins, patios, lawn furniture, window frames, or anything with minute spaces can potentially harbor them.

Earwigs are primarily scavengers, but some are omnivorous or predatory. During their nighttime activity they feed on a wide variety of insects and plants. Plants that they feed on include clover, dahlias, zinnias, butterfly bush, hollyhock, lettuce, cauliflower, strawberry, sunflowers, celery, peaches, plums, grapes, potatoes, roses, seedling beans and beets, and tender grass shoots and roots; they have also been known to eat corn silk, damaging the corn.

Earwigs are harmless to people. There is no evidence that they transmit diseases to humans or other animals. Their pincers are commonly believed to be dangerous, but cause little harm to humans. It is a common urban legend that earwigs crawl into the human ear and lay eggs in the brain. Finding earwigs in the human ear is rare, as most species do not fly and prefer dark and damp areas rather than typical bedrooms.
