Pest Prevention Tips

Check out these tips for preventing household pests, pest infestations and the potentially dangerous health and property threats they pose.
  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home including entry points for utilities and pipes.
  • Keep tree branches and shrubbery well trimmed and away from the house.
  • Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
  • Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly.
  • Repair fascia and sofits and rotted roof shingles; some insects are drawn to deteriorating wood.
  • Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around basement foundation and windows.
  • Store fire wood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground.
  • Call Dave at 1-800-400-6009 for additional advice and treatment if necessary.

About Mosquitoes - Part Two

While we cannot totally eliminate those pesky mosquitoes, (after all, they do serve a role in the environmental food chain), we can take steps to reduce or eliminate their breeding sites.
  • Begin by replacing all standing water at least once a week. This includes bird baths, ponds and unfiltered pools.
  • Remove unneeded vegetation or trash from around any standing water sources that cannot be changed, dumped or removed.
  • Introduce mosquito-eating fish such as gambusia, green sunfish, bluegills and minnows to standing water. Screen windows, doors and other openings with mesh.
  • Avoid going outdoors when and where mosquitoes are most active: during dusk or dawn. Use insect repellent containing DEET on exposed skin whenever or wherever mosquitoes are likely to bite.

About Mosquitoes - Part One

One of the best known summer pests, mosquitoes breed in stagnant water or soft soil and can develop from egg to adult in 10 to 14 days. Female mosquitoes suck our blood. Male mosquitoes feed on plant nectars. They can develop from egg to adult in 10 to 14 days. They are most active from dusk to dawn and will fly up to 14 miles for a blood meal.

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water sources such as storm drains, old tires, children's wading pools and birdbaths, and are well-known to spread diseases such as West Nile Virus, malaria and dengue fever.

Summer Offering

All the rain and the bouts of hot and humid weather are ideal conditions for many summer insects. That's why we offer our customers seasonal pest control plans. Here is what the summer brings...

Pests: All of the new beginnings from spring have come to full bloom in the summer for pest activity. The maximum activity puts more pressure on our homes as the insects are seeking more favorable living conditions for food, moisture, lower temperatures, harborage, etc. All of these can be quickly found in our homes.

Stinging Insects: The predators of the insect world (scorpions, spiders, centipedes, etc.) follow their prey into our homes during this increased activity. They enter through cracks, crevices, damaged areas around our doors, windows, eaves, weep holes, plumbing penetrations, electrical/utility connections, etc. They are not seeking us, but interaction between people and these "stinging" insects is inevitable when we share the same living space.

If you're concerned about the summer pests in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Nectar So Sweet

Honeybees are extremely beneficial insects due to their role in pollination. It is estimated that honeybees pollinate more than 100 crops in the U.S.
Honeybees produce honey from pollen and nectar of the plants they pollinate. They store the honey in honeycombs in their nests. The honey they produce not only feeds their young in colder months, but provides humans with a tasty nectar.

Honeybees often build their nests in tree crevices, but will occasionally build nests in attics or chimneys. Removal of a honeybee nest and the honey product can be very messy, therefore their removal should be addressed by a professional. Because honeybee colonies are so large, only a pest control professional or experienced beekeeper can safely remove a honeybee nest.

Fun fact! The honeybee is the only social insect whose colony can survive many years.

If you're concerned that you have honeybees nesting in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Those Pesky Little Flies

Fruit flies are small pests that are commonly found in homes, restaurants and other facilities where food is processed. They are found on moist, decaying matter that has been stationary for several days.
Fruit flies are found in unsanitary conditions, so they are a potential heath concern, especially when present in health facilities.

Prevention: flies are best prevented through vigilant sanitation practices. Remove kitchen trash daily, and keep counter surfaces clean.

If you're concerned about fruit flies in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Indian Meal Moth

The Indian meal moth was given its name after an insect scientist found it feeding on corn meal, also known as Indian meal. From wing tip to wing tip, adult moths measure from five-eighths of an inch to three-fourths of an inch long.

These moths like to feed on dried fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, chocolate, candies, bird seed, dog food, powdered milk, dried red peppers and candy.

Prevention: Dried food products should be inspected thoroughly for signs of moth infestations. Discard infested foods in outdoor trash bins. Clean infested cupboards thoroughly with a vacuum and soap and water. Store food in sealed containers.

If you're concerned that you have Indian meal moths in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Get goin', Gopher!

Gophers may often be responsible for ruining lawns, killing trees and destroying gardens, but they can also be an important part of the local ecosystem.

Known for building complex underground tunnel systems, gophers are natural bulldozers, using their front legs and long teeth to push dirt out of their tunnels and onto the grass above. Essentially solitary creatures, only one gopher will be found in a tunnel system.

While initially their work seems destructive, they increase soil fertility by mixing plant material and fecal wastes into the soil; their burrowing aerates the soil and speeds up the formation of new soil by bringing minerals to the surface.

If you're concerned about pests in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.
