Dogs And Cats Aren't The Only Ones Bothered By Fleas

Fleas aren’t just a problem for man’s best friend. These pests, which commonly appear in warmer months, feed on the blood of any warm-blooded body. Typically biting human beings, fleas can cause itchy, unsightly marks as well as severe allergic reactions.

Fleas tend to catch a ride with mammals on the move, which can include not only you and your pet but also rodents. If you have a rodent problem in your home, fleas may be soon to follow.

If you suspect a flea infestation, be proactive in treating the problem and contact Dave's Pest Control to rid your home of fleas and to prevent future infestations.

If you're concerned that you have fleas in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

When To Have A Termite Inspection

Home sellers are wise to order a termite inspection report before they market their home. Make sure to use a termite company that specializes in your area. Termite problems tend to vary from one area to the next, so you should rely on a pest control contractor who is an expert in your location.

Select a termite inspector the same way you would any contractor. Get referrals from people who have had termite work done. If you had your home inspected fairly recently consider using the same contractor, unless you had a bad experience.

In some states, termite inspectors don't contract to do repair work. In other states, most structural pest control companies do both the inspecting and the repair work. If you're using the same company to do the inspection and the work, be sure to talk to several people who had work done by the company.

Sellers who are not planning on selling immediately should consider having termite repairs completed before they market their home for sale. Sometimes completing the termite repairs in advance will have the added benefit of improving the home's appearance. The house will show better and you'll have a clean bill of health from the termite company to pass along to the buyers.

It's Time To Think Termites

Termite work refers to repair work done in a home to correct infestation or damage from wood pest organisms such as dry rot, fungus, termites (of which there are various kinds), wood-boring beetles and carpenter ants, to name a few.

Prospective home buyers have houses inspected before they buy so that they are well-informed about the condition of the property. Of the many inspections a buyer might order, a "termite" report is a virtual certainty.

Sellers often pay to repair damage and infestation that developed during their period of ownership. Buyers usually take responsibility for items called in a report that are not active problems but that could become a problem in the future, like a tub that needs caulking.

Home sellers are wise to order a termite inspection report before they market their home. In areas where sellers pay to correct termite repairs, a pre-sale report lets sellers know how much they can expect to pay. It also provides information to the buyers that they will certainly want before purchasing the home.

If you're concerned about termites in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Lyme Disease Is Serious

It's tick season which means Lyme disease, a major health risk to human beings, must be on your radar. Transmitted by ticks, typically between May and October, Lyme disease is largely found in the Northeastern, upper mid-western Western states of the U.S. However, there has been an increase in the diagnosed cases of Lyme disease in the South.

It is critical to be vigilant of ticks, especially if you are in wooded areas. And if you have fruit-bearing trees, particularly apples trees on your property, you most likely have deer visiting your backyard each night. Ticks love hitching a ride on these gentle creatures.

Symptoms of Lyme disease include a "bull's eye" rash around the bite, flu-like symptoms and extreme fatigue.

If you're concerned that you have ticks around your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Summer Is Coming, And So Are The Bugs

The hot and humid days of summers are right around the corner. And while this weather is ideal for beach going and barbeques, they are also ideal conditions for many summer insects. That's why we offer our customers seasonal pest control plans. Here is what the summer brings...

Pests: All of the new beginnings from spring have come to full bloom in the summer for pest activity. The maximum activity puts more pressure on our homes as the insects are seeking more favorable living conditions for food, moisture, lower temperatures, harborage, etc. All of these can be quickly found in our homes.

Stinging Insects: The predators of the insect world (scorpions, spiders, centipedes, etc.) follow their prey into our homes during this increased activity. They enter through cracks, crevices, damaged areas around our doors, windows, eaves, weep holes, plumbing penetrations, electrical/utility connections, etc. They are not seeking us, but interaction between people and these "stinging" insects is inevitable when we share the same living space.

If you're concerned about the summer pests in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Bugs That Lurk In Imported Plants

The following information comes from an article written by Deborah Weisberg for the environment section of The New York Times.

Exotic pests found in imported nursery stock poses an increasing threat to the environment. The hemlock wooly adelgid, which has turned woods from green to brown in many areas of the United States arrived several decades ago on a single hemlock imported for a Virginian's Japanese-style garden. And as news accounts in Massachusetts have covered, emerging threats, like the Asian longhorned beetle, are presenting new headaches.

The federal Agriculture Department, which is responsible for inspecting imported plants, says that the sheer volume arriving from offshore makes inspection of each one impossible. The International Plant Protection Convention recently advised signatory countries to be more vigilant about the health of plants traded on the global market. However, a comprehensive, integrated approach would most likely take years, if not decades.

The ladybug or lady beetle belongs to the family of beetles known as Coccinellidae. These very cute, small insects, ranging from 1 mm to 10 mm (0.04 to 0.4 inches), and are commonly yellow, orange, or scarlet with small black spots on their wing covers, black legs, head and antennae.

Ladybugs are found worldwide, with over 5,000 species described, more than 450 native to North America alone. A few species are pests in North America and Europe, but they are generally considered useful insects as many species feed on aphids or scale insects, which are pests in gardens, agricultural fields, orchards, and similar places.

During the winter months, ladybugs seek refuge indoors. If the little ladies have already entered your home, use a vacuum to remove them. It is important to dispose of the bag outdoors to prevent the insects from crawling out.

Ladybugs are known to secrete an oily yellow liquid when disturbed, and release an odor just before they die, so squishing them is not suggested.

Fun Facts:
  • Ladybugs are a natural means of pest control for gardens.
  • A common myth is that the number of spots on its back indicates its age.

Microscopic, Yet Mighty Plentiful

Nearly impossible to see without magnification, the dust mite is named for the fact that they feed on dead skin shed by humans as well as other protein materials. They may also feed on protein based foodstuffs, preferring dried products over products with moisture.

Beds are the most common area for finding mites due to abundance of dander. House dust mites may also be found in carpet, furniture, and clothing.

Dust mite populations can explode during humid months as these wee creatures are excellent at absorbing moisture from the air.

Approximately 50-80% of asthmatics may have symptoms due to house dust mites, experiencing respiratory constriction. Other allergic reactions include itchy, watery eyes.

If you're concerned that you have dust mites in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Fruit Flies

Summer's around the corner which means so are the fruit flies.

Fruit flies are small pests that are commonly found in homes, restaurants and other facilities where food is processed. They are found on moist, decaying matter that has been stationary for several days. Fruit especially like to feed on fruits and vegetables.

These pesky little creatures are a potential heath concern, especially when present in health facilities. And so the best prevention is through vigilant sanitation practices. Remove kitchen trash daily, and keep counter surfaces clean.

If you're concerned that you have a fruit fly infestation in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Lice, Yuck!

Head lice are not necessarily present due to neglect, unsanitary living conditions, or any kind of abuse. Lice are most easily spread among children who share clothing, hats, or very close contact in these classroom settings. While head lice make no distinction between races, sexes, or economic classes of people, girls tend to get head lice more often than boys, and women more than men.

Body lice infestations spread rapidly under crowded conditions where hygiene is poor and there is frequent contact among people, and infestation is unlikely to persist on anyone who bathes regularly and who regularly has access to freshly laundered clothing and bedding.
The good news is that head and body lice are currently not known to transmit any diseases to humans, so they are not health threats in that way.

If you're concerned about lice in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Dave Answers Your Insect and Pest Control Questions - Part Two

QU: How long do I have to leave the premises?

Dave: Because we use low toxicity chemicals, you can usually stay home during the treatment. Flea and spider treatments require you to leave for 2-3 hours. Roaches, ants, mice, termites, and just about everything else can be taken care of while you're relaxing on the living room couch.

QU: What about pets and children?

Dave: Children need to leave during the treatment and may return 2-3 hours after completion. We ask that during treatments, you either put your pets in a room that is not being treated or remove them from the structure until the materials we have used are dry. Fish tanks need to be covered.

QU: Do the chemicals you use have a real bad odor?

Dave: Another great benefit of low toxicity chemicals is virtually odorless pest control. No longer do you need to be reminded that you received extermination by a nasty, lingering odor.

QU: Do you guarantee your work?

Dave: We stand behind all of our work. Should any problems arise within a reasonable amount of time after the completion of the job, we will return for no extra charge, completely hassle-free.

If you have more questions about insect and rodent control for your home or place of business, give me a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Dave Answers Your Insect and Rodent Control Questions - Part 1

QU: How do I know if I need extermination?

Dave: The answer to this question is pretty simple. If you see just a few ants or just one mouse, those few ants or one mouse have a whole bunch of buddies lurking where you can't see them. If you have even a slightly visible problem then you have a problem. Left untreated, you could have a crisis.

QU: What are your "environmentally sound alternatives?"

Dave: We use state-of-the-art low toxicity chemicals that are much less harmful to people, pets, and their environments than what is currently offered by the majority of the pest control market.

QU: I have a whole bunch of pests and a lot of them. Do you have a solution?

Dave: If you have a feeling one treatment isn't enough to keep your house pest free, we offer a couple of different options.

If you have more questions about insect and rodent control for your home or place of business, give me a call at 1-800-400-6009.
