A "Mischief"

Did you know that a group of rats is called a "mischief?" And did you know that there is an Indian temple, overrun with rats, where people go to pray with the rats who they believe to be deceased loved ones reincarnated as these rodents?

Whether it is the man on "Hoarders" living with 2500 rats, or NPMA expert Greg Baumann discussing the love-hate relationship with rats on The History Channel's Modern Marvels, those creatures do hold a fascination for us. (Well, some of us!)

However, it is important to remember that rats do pose health threats. Rats are vectors of disease, often contaminating food, and can cause many serious illnesses and diseases in human beings.

If you're concerned that you have rats in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Pest Fact ....Ticks and Winter Weather

Did you know that blacklegged (deer) ticks, carriers of Lyme disease, like to spend the winter nestled in the fur of a deer?  If you have deer in your yard this winter, your pet may come into contact with ticks.

As long as temperatures stay below 35° F, ticks remain inactive. On warmer days, however, those ticks may be out looking for a blood meal. Anytime temperatures rise above 35° F, you should take precautions to avoid tick bites, just as you do in summer months.

Dust Mite Prevention

Here are some basic tips to prevent dust mites. Of course, the best course of action if you have a problem is to give me a call!
  • Frequently change bed linens. If house dust mites are a serious problem, mattress encasement with a cover tested for house dust mites may be helpful
  • Vacuum areas frequently using a HEPA filter vacuum
  • Keep humidity low when possible; heating or freezing infested fabric may help
  • If asthmatic, avoid playing with children or animals on a carpeted area
  • This is not a pest which can be controlled easily; a professional pest management firm can inspect and identify mites in living areas and provide further guidance on control. There are very few products available for the control of house dust mites.
If you're concerned that you have dust mites in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Unsure About Pest Control Services?

If you've never used a pest control service before, here are a few answers to some commonly asked questions.

What are your environmentally sound alternatives? We use state-of-the-art, low toxicity chemicals that are much less harmful to people, pets, and their environments than what is currently offered by the majority of the pest control market.

Will I have to leave the premises? Because we use low toxicity chemicals, you can usually stay home during the treatment. Flea and spider treatments require you to leave for 2-3 hours. Roaches, ants, mice, termites, and just about everything else can be taken care of while you're relaxing on the living room couch.

What about pets and children? Children need to leave during the treatment and may return 2-3 hours after completion. We ask that during treatments, you either put your pets in a room that is not being treated or remove them from the structure until the materials we have used are dry. Fish tanks need to be covered.

Do the chemicals you use have a real bad odor? Another great benefit of low toxicity chemicals is virtually odorless pest control. No longer do you need to be reminded that you received extermination by a nasty, lingering odor.

If you have any other questions or would like more detailed information, visit our web site Dave's Pest Control or call Dave at 1-800-400-6009.

House Dust Mites

House dust mites have received much attention recently. Although nearly impossible to see, the house dust mite is a live-in guest that won't go away primarily because their food source is unlimited.

House dust mites feed on dander or dead skin from humans and animals. They may also feed on protein based foodstuffs, preferring dried products over products with moisture. Females lay up to 80 eggs. Populations can explode during humid months as mites are excellent at absorbing moisture from the air.

The most common area for finding mites is in the bed due to abundance of dander. House dust mites may also be found in living areas especially carpet, furniture, and clothing. Several home test kits are available to test for dust mites.

People may be allergic to house dust mite cast skins and droppings. These reactions will not be a rash type of reaction but rather a respiratory constriction, a common symptom of asthma. Itchy, watery eyes may also be symptoms. Approximately 50-80% of asthmatics may have symptoms due to house dust mites.

If you're concerned dust mites in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Is It TIme To Call An Exterminator?

Here are a few common questions people ask us...

How do I know if I need extermination? The answer to this question is pretty simple. If you see just a few ants or just one mouse, those few ants or one mouse have a whole bunch of buddies; lurking where you can't see them. If you have even a slightly visible problem then you have a problem. Left untreated, you could have a crisis.

I have a whole bunch of pests and a lot of them. Do you have a solution? If you have a feeling one treatment isn't enough to keep your house pest free, we offer a couple of different options. The service technicians at Dave's Pest Control will come to your home or business, assess the situation, and offer a solution that will fit your needs and your budget.

Meet the Powderpost Beetle

Powderpost beetles lay their eggs in cracks of wood and the larvae tunnel into the surface, filling it with a very fine powder-like dust. Powderpost beetles have long, narrow, flat bodies that allow them to easily attack wood surfaces. These beetles are reddish-brown in color.

Adult powderpost beetles are very active at night, enjoy flying and are attracted to the light. Powderpost beetles often attack hardwoods, and can be found in hardwood floors, timbers and crates, antiques and other objects made of hardwood materials.

Some researchers believe that powderpost beetles are second only to termites in the United States in their destructiveness to wood and wood products.

If you're concerned that you have powderpost beetles in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.
