Pest Health Threats - Part 6

Ants are social insects. Therefore, spotting one ant unfortunately signifies there are many more to follow. Ants are not simply unsightly – they can also be dangerous contaminates to food. Considering that you likely eat multiple meals a day in your home, the presence of ants and the potential for food contamination from their presence is an issue that must be addressed when considering your health and the health of your family.

If you have an ant infestation, be sure to take action to treat the problem and contact Dave's Pest Control to aid you in preventing future infestations.

Pest Health Threats - Part 5

Fleas aren’t just a problem for man’s best friend. These pests, which commonly appear in warmer months, feed on the blood of any warm-blooded body. Typically biting human beings, fleas can cause itchy, unsightly marks as well as severe allergic reactions.

Fleas tend to catch a ride with mammals on the move, which can include not only you and your pet but also rodents. If you have a rodent problem in your home, fleas may be soon to follow.

If you suspect a flea infestation, be proactive in treating the problem and contact Dave's Pest Control to rid your home of fleas and to prevent future infestations.

If you're concerned that you have fleas in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Pest Health Threats - Part 4

Lyme disease has emerged, in recent years, as a major health risk to human beings. Transmitted by ticks, typically between May and October, lyme disease is largely found in the Northeastern, upper mid-western Western states of the U.S. However, there has been an increase in the diagnosed cases of lyme disease in the South.

If you have fruit-bearing trees, particularly apples trees on your property, you most likely have deer visiting your backyard each night. Ticks love hitching a ride on these gentle creatures.

It is critical to be vigilant of ticks, especially if you are in wooded areas. Symptoms of Lyme disease include a "bull's eye" rash around the bite, flu-like symptoms and extreme fatigue.

If you're concerned that you have ticks around your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Pest Health Threats - Part 3

With the increased prevalence of West Nile Virus, mosquitoes continue to be, not only a summer nuisance pest but also, a major health threat. And despite the autumn chill, it only takes a few warm days and those pests swarm back into action in search of blood.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), mosquito-borne infections have appeared across the United States in recent years, which makes avoiding mosquito nesting/breeding sites and eliminating standing water in or around the home even more important to the protection of public health.

In addition, to the potential for West Nile Virus, mosquitoes can also cause itchy, unsightly marks as well as severe allergic reactions in human beings.

If you're concerned about mosquito breeding sites around your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Bed Bug Precautions

With news reports of clothing stores being shut down due to bed bug infestations, here are a few precautions you should take when buying new clothing, including socks, underwear, even sheets and towels...
  • Do not place newly purchased garments or other cloth items in the closet or drawers.
  • Place articles in the dryer for at least 20 minutes. The heat will kill them and their eggs.
Remember, it does not matter what the price range is of the clothing, or if the outfit comes from a high-end store. These items often arrive in shipments from other countries where precautions are not taken.

Of course, if you're concerned that you have bed bugs in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Pest Health Threats - Part 2

Stinging insects send more than 500,000 people to the emergency room each year. These pests are aggressive in nature and often sting as a way to protect their colonies or larvae from human beings who attempt to remedy an infestation on their own.

This aggressiveness, combined with being disturbed, often means that these pests tend to sting repeatedly, which adds to the potential for greater skin irritation or a serious allergic reaction.

At Dave's Pest Control,
we provide a level of expertise and knowledge of technology that can best rid these stinging insects and prevents future infestations.

If you're concerned that you have stinging insects nesting around your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Did you know that some of the most common pests in homes are cockroaches, rodents and ants? It is disconcerting enough to realize that we share our homes with these critters and crawlers, particularly because of the serious threats they pose to our health and our families health.

Over the next few blog entries, I'll offer a more detailed overview of the health risks associated with some insects and rodents.

More About Cockroaches

Cockroaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms, and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. They can pick up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies as they crawl through decaying matter or sewage and then carry these into food or onto food surfaces. Germs that cockroaches eat from decaying matter or sewage are protected while in their bodies and may remain infective for several weeks longer than if they had been exposed to cleaning agents, rinse water, or just sunlight and air.

Recent medical studies have shown that cockroach allergens cause lots of allergic reactions in inner city children. They were even shown to cause asthma in children. These allergens build up in deposits of droppings, secretions, cast skins, and dead bodies of roaches.

Good sanitation and habitat reduction, along with vacuuming, surveillance, a baiting program, and some sealing of cracks can usually quickly reduce or eliminate a cockroach population.

If you're concerned that you have cockroaches in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Keep Pests Out of Your Home This Winter

This is the time of year raccoons, possums, skunks, squirrels, etc. are wanting a nice dry, warm location to bed down. They bring with them ticks, fleas, mites, and more.

Our cultural and holiday activities contribute to pest infestations in our homes during the winter months. The winter clothes we bring out of storage in the attics, boxes, backs of closets, etc. may bring out clothes moths, silverfish, roaches, etc. Holiday materials bought at the store or brought out of storage may have been waiting for a year to be used.

Christmas trees may have bark beetles, aphids, mites, etc. Also, other decorations you adorn the home with may have infestations. The plants, you bring in from outside to protect from harsh weather often bring hitchhikers that are not wanted. The wood for your fireplace may carry beetles, termites, ants, roaches, centipedes, scorpions, earwigs, as unwanted guests

If you're concerned about unwanted winter pests in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.
