They're Back...

They're back... Mosquito season is here, so let's review a few facts about those pesky bloodsuckers!

One of the best known summer pests, mosquitoes breed in stagnant water or soft soil and can develop from egg to adult in 10 to 14 days. Female mosquitoes suck our blood. Male mosquitoes feed on plant nectars. They can develop from egg to adult in 10 to 14 days. They are most active from dusk to dawn and will fly up to 14 miles for a blood meal.

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water sources such as storm drains, old tires, children's wading pools and birdbaths, and are well-known to spread diseases such as West Nile Virus, malaria and dengue fever.

More Pest Trivia

The Madagascan Hissing Cockroach is one of the few insects who give birth to live young, rather than laying eggs.

Cicadas breathe through spiracles - small holes in the abdomen.

Insects have been present for about 350 million years, while humans have only walked the earth for 130,000 years.

Pests, Pest Control and Asthma

Here is some information provided by the National Pest Management Association on pests and asthma.

1. What’s the connection between pests and asthma in children? Could you explain it?
Cockroaches and rodents contain allergens that aggravate existing asthma in children.

2. How does pest control (commonly called exterminating) help alleviate asthma?
Proper pest control will help prevent or remove pests that can trigger asthma. A pest management professional, often referred to as an exterminator) can inspect the home for these pests, treat to get rid of them and provide homeowners tips to prevent reinfestation.

3. What are cockroach/mouse allergens? What is it in these pests that causes the problem?
Allergens include pest “frass,” or carcasses, feces and other debris.

4. What happens after you control the pests? If the frass is left behind, won’t it pose a health risk also?
The residual frass is still an allergen, even after the pests are removed. A pest control professional can remove the frass as well.

If you're concerned about pest risks in your home or business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

General Pest Infestation Prevention Tips

Here are a few simple tips for preventing household pests, pest infestations and the potentially dangerous health and property threats they pose.
  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home including entry points for utilities and pipes.
  • Keep tree branches and shrubbery well trimmed and away from the house.
  • Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
  • Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly.
  • Repair fascia and sofits and rotted roof shingles; some insects are drawn to deteriorating wood.
  • Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around basement foundation and windows.
  • Store fire wood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground.
  • Call Dave's Pest Control for additional advice and treatment if necessary.

More Termite FAQs

Close up view of termite swarm
1. When does a homeowner see termites?
Termites swarm in the early spring, depending on their geographical location.

2. What can a homeowner do to prevent termites?
The most important thing is to remove the conducive conditions termites need to survive. Termites love moisture; avoid moisture accumulation around the foundation of your home. Prevent termites by diverting water away with properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks. Reduce humidity in crawl spaces with proper ventilation.

Prevent shrubs, vines and other vegetation from growing over and covering vents. Be sure to remove old form boards, grade stakes, etc., left in place after the building was constructed. Remove old tree stumps and roots around and beneath the building.

Most importantly, eliminate any wood contact with the soil. An 18-inch gap between the soil and wood portions of the building is ideal. It doesn't hurt to routinely inspect the foundation of your home for signs of termite damage.

3. How are termites controlled?
Dave's Pest Control will come in and treat the problem so that you can live comfortably in your home.

4. What is the most effective type of termite treatment?
Dave's Pest Control committed to providing highly effective treatment options for all pest issues. The most effective type of treatment depends upon the severity of the infestation, the species of termite, and the location and construction of the home or building. Dave will assess each infestation separately and recommend a rigorous treatment plan that will effectively control the termite population.

5. How difficult are termites to treat?
Termites are nearly impossible for homeowners to treat on their own. On the other hand, Dave's Pest Control has the training, expertise and technology to eliminate termite infestations.

Beware Stagnant Water

Pools of stagnant water, in storm drains, old tires, children's wading pools and birdbaths, left behind by springtime rain are a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water sources such as

Female mosquitoes suck our blood. Male mosquitoes feed on plant nectars. They can develop from egg to adult in 10 to 14 days. They are most active from dusk to dawn and will fly up to 14 miles for a blood meal.

Mosquitoes are well-known to spread diseases such as West Nile Virus, malaria and dengue fever.

Eliminate or reduce mosquito breeding sites by replacing all standing water at least once a week. This includes bird baths, ponds and unfiltered pools. Remove unneeded vegetation or trash from around any standing water sources that cannot be changed, dumped or removed. Introduce mosquito-eating fish such as gambusia, green sunfish, bluegills and minnows to standing water. Screen windows, doors and other openings with mesh. Avoid going outdoors when and where mosquitoes are most active: during dusk or dawn. Use insect repellent containing DEET on exposed skin whenever or wherever mosquitoes are likely to bite.

Termite FAQs

1. What are termites?
Termites are wood-destroying insects. Their presence dates back to the dinosaurs. While they play an important role in nature, experts estimate they cause $5 billion of property damage each year.

2. Are there different kinds of termites?
Yes, the three major kinds of termites in the United States are dampwood, drywood and subterranean. Dampwood termites commonly live in heavily forested areas of the country as they prefer wet wood; while, drywood termites, much more rare in the United States, prefer extremely dry wood. Subterranean termites require moist environments, live mainly in the soil and are the most destructive species.

3. How do you recognize termites?
Depending on your geographical location, termite swarms should be visible in the early spring. Termite swarms can be confused with flying ants. Telltale signs of termite infestation include soft wood in the home, mud tubes in the interior or exterior of your home (often near the foundation), and darkening or blistering of wood structures.

5. How much damage do termites cause?
Termites work 24 hours/7 days a week at damaging the wood in and around a structure. And, while they cause $5 billion in damage each year, there is no reason to think that termites cannot be controlled.

Mexican Jumping Beans

Mexican jumping bean is an occurrence native to Mexico, where it is known as Frijoles saltarines.

Physically, Mexican jumping beans resemble small tan to brown beans. They are a seed pod through which the larva of a small moth has chewed.

Mexican "Jumping" Beans jump because of a moth larva living inside each one.

Insectarium

Love Bug, by Jeff Strout
Did you know that New Orleans is home to the largest bug museum in the United States?

Operated by a local non-profit named the Audubon Nature Institute, the self-described "largest freestanding bug museum in the United States" is "a shrine to insects," according to its president and CEO, Ron Forman. The bugseum features numeroous hands-on exhibits and "loud, wacky edutainment displays," thus living up to its tagline: "You'll be infested with fun."

Highlights include an over-sized "den" where you are shrunk to the size of a bug and are threatened by a bird and a trapdoor spider; an "immersion theater" where things pop out at you and mist sprays in your face; a replica swamp and an indoor butterfly garden.

Ron Forman calls New Orleans "the ideal place" for a bug museum. Insects have shaped much of the history of the city, from the cockroaches to the termites to the malaria epidemics."

Termites Devour 10 Million Rupees

As if termites eating us out of house and home weren't enough...

In India, staff at the State Bank of India in Arthur were shocked when they opened the steel vault to discover that termites had dined on 10 million rupees, equal to $222,000 of currency.

In a report in the Daily News & Analysis, acting bank manager J.P. Dived blamed the age of the building housing the strong room, saying it was riddled with termites.

"We have been trying our best to keep currency notes safe but the termite problem here is so enormous that it would be better to move the branch elsewhere," he told Daily News & Analysis.
