Open Pipe Mud Daubers

This group of wasps gets its common name from the fact that they construct their nest of mud. Mud daubers are solitary wasps found throughout the United States. They are not social and do not live in colonies. Mud daubers provision spiders for their larvae by paralyzing them with their venom and bringing them into their nests.

Female mud daubers construct nests of mud. Many short mud tubes, usually about 1” long, are constructed side by side. They usually build their nests in a sheltered site, such as under eaves, porch ceilings, in garages and sheds left open, in barns and attics. Nests typically exhibit round holes in them as the wasps emerge. This means the nest is probably old and inactive after springtime.

Mud daubers do not defend their nests and only rarely sting. They are typically considered nuisance pests, and are actually beneficial as they help control spiders.

Although mud daubers are not typically dangerous, their nests should be removed by a pest management professional if found on your property, as their abandoned nests are often adopted by other more dangerous wasp species.

If you're concerned that you have mud daubers in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Protect Your WInter Wools From Clothing Moths

Moths love wool and your winter woolen wear is a smorgasboard for these flying pests. The Clothing Moth (Tineola bisselliella) is a species of moths from the Tineidae moth family. The caterpillar (larva) of this moth is recognized as a serious pest. It can derive nourishment not only from clothing – in particular wool – and also, like most moth caterpillars, from many other sources.

Contrary to what most people believe, adult clothing moths do not eat or cause any damage to clothing or fabric. It is the larvae which are solely responsible for this, spending their entire time eating and foraging for food.

Both adults and larvae prefer low light conditions. Whereas most other moths are drawn to light, clothing moths seem to prefer dim or dark areas. If larvae find themselves in a well-lit room, they will try to relocate under furniture or carpet edges. Hand made rugs are a favorite because it is easy for them to crawl underneath and do their damage from below. They will also crawl under moldings at the edges of rooms in search of darkened areas which hold good food.

If you're concerned that you have clothing moths in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

  • Dispose of garbage regularly and store in sealed containers.

More Pest Trivia

For our trivia-loving friends . . .
  • In Mexico you might find pulgas vestidas, or "dressed fleas" for sale. Fleas are dressed in tiny costumes and posed holding tiny loaves of bread, tools, or other items.
  • Scorpion babies crawl on top of their mother and live there for the first week or two, feeding on scraps of her catches.
  • Although the plague is often believed to be an historical disease, about 10-15 people in the U.S. contract this flea-borne illness each year.

Creating an Integrated Pest Management Plan for Businesses

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a common sense way for businesses to address pest and rodent problems. This method of pest control focuses on three key techniques:
  1. inspecting for pests,
  2. identifying pests, and
  3. control by pest professionals.
IPM bases its pest control recommendations on your business’ unique needs. Pest control professionals do not use a “one size fits all” approach. Whether sealing cracks, removing a food or water source or, when necessary, employing pesticide treatments, integrated pest management is about finding the best pest control treatment of pest problems.

For more information on integrated pest management, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Pests and Your Health

Insects and rodents can have an adverse and serious effect on our health.

QU: What’s the connection between pests and asthma in children? Could you explain it?
Cockroaches and rodents contain allergens that aggravate existing asthma in children.

QU: How does pest control (commonly called exterminating) help alleviate asthma?
Proper pest control will help prevent or remove pests that can trigger asthma. A pest management professional, often referred to as an exterminator) can inspect the home for these pests, treat to get rid of them and provide homeowners tips to prevent reinfestation.

QU: What are cockroach/mouse allergens? What is it in these pests that causes the problem?Allergens include pest “frass,” or carcasses, feces and other debris.

QU: What happens after you control the pests? If the frass is left behind, won’t it pose a health risk also?
The residual frass is still an allergen, even after the pests are removed. A pest control professional can remove the frass as well.

If you're concerned about the health effects of insects and rodents in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.
