Tips To Guard Against Stink Bugs - Part 2

Fall has arrived and so have the stink bugs. Notorious for their "smelly" reputation, stink bugs frequently enter homes during the cooler months in search of a warm place to overwinter.

While stink bugs do not pose a health or property risk to homeowners, this pest can quickly become an odoriferous nuisance around the home.

Here are some more infestation prevention tips:
  • Reduce moisture sites: Eliminating all moisture build up around your home can go a long way to help prevent many pest infestations. Check for leaking pipes and clogged drains.
  • Eliminate food sources: Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly in sealed receptacles. Also, make sure you wipe down counters and sweep floors to eliminate crumbs and residue from spills.
  • Ventilate: Properly ventilate basements, attics, garages and crawl spaces to eliminate harborage points. Consider using a dehumidifier in these areas. Also, make sure to install screens over your chimney and attic vents.

Tips To Guard Against Stink Bugs - Part 1

As the temperatures begin to drop, now is a good time to pest proofing the home, both inside and out, to prevent stink bugs and other pests from becoming unwelcome house guests this fall.

Over the next few posts I'll offer some simple steps that you can take right now to keep stink bugs at bay:

1. Seal off entry points: Spend some time inspecting the outside of your home for easy access points. Pay close attention to areas including around siding and utility pipes, behind chimneys, and underneath the wood fascia or other openings. Seal any cracks and holes that are found using a good quality silicone or silicone-latex caulk.

2. Replace and repair: Stink bugs can enter the home through the smallest openings, so it’s important to repair or replace damaged screens on windows or doors. Don’t forget to check for torn weather-stripping and loose mortar. You can also install door sweeps if necessary.

 3. Turn off the lights: Stink bugs are attracted to lights, so it’s recommended to keep outdoor lighting to a minimum. During the evenings, turn off porch lights and pull down window blinds to prevent light from spilling outside.

Holiday and Pests

The holiday season is upon us and our cultural activities contribute to pest infestations in our homes during the winter months. The winter clothes we bring out of storage in the attics, boxes, and backs of closets may bring out clothes moths, silverfish, roaches, to name a few pests.

Holiday materials bought at the store or brought out of storage may have been waiting for a year to be used. Christmas trees may have bark beetles, aphids, and mites. Also, other decorations you adorn the home with may have infestations.

The plants you bring in from outside to protect from harsh weather often bring hitchhikers that are not wanted. Even the wood for your fireplace may carry beetles, termites, ants, roaches, centipedes, scorpions, and earwigsas unwanted guests.

If you're concerned that you have more than your friends and family visiting your home or place of business this holiday season, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

Guard Against Winter Pests

While most folks see a reduction in pest activity during winter, it does not mean the problem is gone. With the mild climate, pests are just more reclusive during the winter months.

Rodent activity in our homes, for example, significantly increases. House mice, roof rats and Norway rats are driven to seek warmer shelter with food and water sources. Our homes provide all of these needs.

Numerous pests we see during the rest of the year "over winter" to hibernate or pupate in our attics, crawl spaces, wall voids, under exterior siding. Many of these pests, such as cluster flies, ladybugs, boxleder bugs, stink bugs, and yellow jackets are finding a safe and warm place in winter so they can start all over again in spring.

Winter is also  the time of year raccoons, possums, skunks, and squirrels are wanting a nice dry, warm location to bed down. They bring with them ticks, fleas, mites, and the like.

More Pest Trivia

  • To survive the cold winter months, many insects replace their body water with a chemical called glycerol, which acts as an "antifreeze" against the temperatures.
  • All insects have a hard exoskeleton, six jointed legs, two antennae, compound eyes and a body divided into 3 main body sections - a head, thorax and abdomen.
  • Given the list of mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, termites, ticks, spiders, mice/rats, and bees/wasps, mosquitoes were perceived as the most difficult to control among almost half of the respondents (47%).

Did You Know . . .

Did  you know . . .

Africanized "killer" bees looks so much like a regular honeybee that the only way to tell the two apart is by measuring their bodies. A dangerous stinging insect, Africanized bees have different wing measurements than honeybees.

Africanized Honey Bees have been known to chase people for over a quarter of a mile once they got excited and aggressive.

If you are chased by Africanized bees, run in a zig-zag pattern and seek shelter in a house or car.

Understanding Pest Control Services

Many people think pest control means buying a can of Raid or setting some mousetraps and laying out bait. But thorough pest control is a process.

If you've never used a pest control service before, here are a few answers to some commonly asked questions.

What are your environmentally sound alternatives? We use state-of-the-art, low toxicity chemicals that are much less harmful to people, pets, and their environments than what is currently offered by the majority of the pest control market.

Will I have to leave the premises? Because we use low toxicity chemicals, you can usually stay home during the treatment. Flea and spider treatments require you to leave for 2-3 hours. Roaches, ants, mice, termites, and just about everything else can be taken care of while you're relaxing on the living room couch.

What about pets and children? Children need to leave during the treatment and may return 2-3 hours after completion. We ask that during treatments, you either put your pets in a room that is not being treated or remove them from the structure until the materials we have used are dry. Fish tanks need to be covered.

Do the chemicals you use have a real bad odor? Another great benefit of low toxicity chemicals is virtually odorless pest control. No longer do you need to be reminded that you received extermination by a nasty, lingering odor.

Rats Under Your Roof

Ever sit in your livingroom or bedroom and hear a thump, thump, scratch scratch coming from within the ceiling above? You just might have roof rats....

Roof rats get their name from their tendency to be found in the upper parts of buildings, and can also be found under, in, and around structures. They only need a space of one-half inch to get into buildings.

Ranging in size from 6 to 8 inches in length, not including their tails, they have very poor vision and are color blind. They do have extremely strong senses of hearing, smell, touch and taste.

Roof rats are known for the damage they cause by chewing on materials and eating stored foods.

Roof rats secured their place in history by spreading the highly dangerous bubonic plague. They support many ectoparasites and urinate on food.
