Tips To Guard Against Stink Bugs - Part 2

Fall has arrived and so have the stink bugs. Notorious for their "smelly" reputation, stink bugs frequently enter homes during the cooler months in search of a warm place to overwinter.

While stink bugs do not pose a health or property risk to homeowners, this pest can quickly become an odoriferous nuisance around the home.

Here are some more infestation prevention tips:
  • Reduce moisture sites: Eliminating all moisture build up around your home can go a long way to help prevent many pest infestations. Check for leaking pipes and clogged drains.
  • Eliminate food sources: Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly in sealed receptacles. Also, make sure you wipe down counters and sweep floors to eliminate crumbs and residue from spills.
  • Ventilate: Properly ventilate basements, attics, garages and crawl spaces to eliminate harborage points. Consider using a dehumidifier in these areas. Also, make sure to install screens over your chimney and attic vents.

Stink Bugs Looking To Keep Warm

As temperatures fall, stink bugs will be looking for a way indoors.Since arriving from Asia, brown marmorated stink bugs have become a nuisance for homeowners. Notorious for their “smelly” reputation, stink bugs secrete a bad-smelling, bad-tasting fluid when disturbed or when crushed.

Although they are not known to bite humans, caution should be used when handling them to avoid a release of their odor.

Stink Bug Forecast

After a brutal winter that sent stink bugs into hiding, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) is warning homeowners that these pests will become active again with the warm weather – and that their growing populations are likely to make infestations significantly worse than in previous seasons.

”Findings from the U.S. Department of Agriculture on the size of overwintering populations support NPMA’s prediction that this season’s stink bug population will be larger than in the past,” says Jim Fredericks, director of technical services for the NPMA. “As the weather warms, stink bugs emerge from overwintering sites and try to exit structures, but sometimes they enter our living spaces instead.”

“Although these smelly pests do not pose serious property or safety threats to homeowners, their tendency to invade homes in high numbers can be a nuisance,” says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. “Luckily, there are steps people can take to prevent stink bugs from entering their homes.”

NPMA offers the following tips:

* Seal cracks around windows, doors, electrical outlets, ceiling fans and light switches.
* Replace outdoor lighting with yellow bulbs, which are less attractive to stink bugs.
* Repair damaged window screens. Also screen attic and crawlspace vents.
* Use a vacuum to eliminate stink bugs indoors. Seal vacuum’s contents in a plastic bag and dispose of it immediately.

Bed Bug VS Stink Bug

The news media may have been nearly obsessive in its coverage of bed bugs this year, but when it comes to insect nuisances, the stink bug is giving bed bugs a run for the money.

The brown marmorated stink bugs, although native to Asia, are increasing in number, particularly in the Middle Atlantic states, damaging fruit and vegetable crops. And while they don't bite, they so gross people out. They drop from doorways, can creep into virtually any space, and make the mistake of crushing one...and you'll think you've run over a skunk.

First found in Allentown, PA in 199, the stink bug seemingly has no natural enemies here. Researchers are working earnestly to understand why the bugs reproduced at a faster rate this year, and come up with a way to protect vegetable and fruit crops from this invader.

Yuck! That Stinks!

That's right....crush one of those little pests and the smell is quite unpleasant. Hence the name: the Stink Bug. Originally found in East Asia, Stink Bugs made their first reported appearance in the United States in the late 1990s. They get their name because release an unpleasant odor when you crush them or when they are protecting their homes.

Stink bugs eat leaves, flowers, fruit and crops like soybeans. They also eat other pests, such as caterpillars. And while they do not harm humans, they can cause a lot of damage to crops and plants.

To prevent stink bug infestations around your home:
  • Seal cracks around your house
  • Replace damaged screen on doors and windows
  • If you see a stink bug indoors vacuum them up and throw away the bag immediately
  • Keep weeds around the garden in control and clean up the garden at the end of the growing season
  • Hand pick stink bugs in early morning when they are slow moving
