Helpful Mice

Mice are common experimental animals in biology and psychology because they share a high degree of homology with humans. The mouse genome has been sequenced, and virtually all mouse genes have human homologs. They can also be manipulated in ways that would be considered unethical to do with humans. A knockout mouse is a genetically engineered mouse that has had one or more of its genes made inoperable through a gene knockout.

There are other reasons why mice are used in laboratory research. Mice are small, inexpensive, easily maintained, and can reproduce quickly. Several generations of mice can be observed in a relatively short period of time. Mice are generally very docile if raised from birth and given sufficient human contact. However, certain strains have been known to be quite temperamental. Mice and rats have the same organs in the same places, just different proportions.

Tips to Prevent Mice and Rodents Inside the Home - Part Two

As I mentioned last time, rodents are very resourceful creatures. They can enter a building or home through the tiniest opening or crack.

Here are a few more tips from an article by Missy Henriksen of PestWorld.
  • Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
  • Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains that provide the perfect breeding site for pests.
  • Inspect items such as boxes, grocery bags and other packages brought into the home.
  • Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and keep shrubbery trimmed and cut back from the house.
  • And of course, if you suspect a pest infestation in your home, call me at 1-800-400-6009.  We'll inspect and treat the pest problem right away.
Remember, if you're concerned that you have rodents in your home or place of business, give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

10 Easy Tips to Prevent Mice and Rodents Inside the Home - Part One

Many homeowners experience finding mice or rodents in their home at some time or another. Whether in the kitchen, attic, basement or dining room – a rodent sighting or signs of their presence is unsettling.  Unfortunately, these resourceful creatures can enter a building or home through the tiniest opening or crack.

In this blog posting and the next one, I will share with you some tips I read in a  recent article by of PestWorld.
  • Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens.
  • Screen vents and openings to chimneys.
  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home, including areas where utilities and pipes enter the home, using caulk, steel wool or a combination of both.
  • Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly.
  • Keep attics, basements and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.

More tips next time . . .

Of course, if you're concerned that you have odents in your home or place of business, don't wait! Give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

More Pest Facts

Here are a few more fun facts about insects and rodents!

Did you know . . .
  • Mice feed 15-20 times a day.
  • Poisons in the body of a Monarch butterfly are sufficient to kill a small lizard and cause severe vomiting in large birds.
  • Rats can squeeze through a space as small as a half dollar.
  • Crickets are omnivores and eat both plants and animals.

House Mice

The house mouse is the most common rodent pest in most parts of the world. It can breed rapidly and adapt quickly to changing conditions.

House mice can breed throughout the year and can share nests. These little creatures live in structures, but they can live outdoors.

Micro droplets of mouse urine can cause allergies in children. Mice can also bring fleas, mites, ticks and lice into your home.

This Year's Tick Season Might Be the Worst in Years

The National Pest Management Association has release a news report regarding this year's tick season.

"Health and insect experts are calling it a perfect storm of conditions coming together to create a tick population explosion - lack of acorns and the mild winter. Specifically, the mild winter has allowed ticks, much like other insects to thrive and emerge earlier than usual. As for the acorns, oak trees produced an extremely large acorn crop in 2010, which led to a boom in the white-footed mouse population last year.

"As a result, the blacklegged (deer) tick population also increased because ticks had an abundance of mice to feed on when they hatched. However, this spring those same ticks will be looking for their next blood meal and since mice will be in short-supply, the ticks will turn to the next best thing - humans!"

In my next blog, I'll talk about preventative measure you can take to limit your risk to tick exposure.

How To Get Rid of Mice - Part Two

A mouse is capable of getting through an opening only one quarter of an inch wide. It is important to check for openings where mice can gain entry, such as openings around doors, windows, foundations, and vents. If you live in a mobile home or have a crawl space, check around plumbing pipes inside cabinets for spaces mice can get in. Using steel wool to fill in cracks and openings to temporarily keep mice out is  a good remedy.

There are various types of traps that can be used to capture or kill mice. Traps are advantageous since poisons can be dangerous, and with traps the dead mice can easily be located and disposed of. When poisons are used, the mice often die and are not found until there is an odor. Also, poisoned mice can pose a danger to pets that may eat them. A good bait to attract mice is peanut butter. It is not easily removed without setting off the trap.

Live traps can trap more than one mouse at a time, and the mice can be released without harm in another location. Glue traps will hold mice with a special glue, but they can be ineffective with high temperatures or in dusty locations. It is advised to use caution when placing any traps where pets and children can access them.

Of course, the best course of action is to have a professional take care of your rodent problem. So give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.

How to Get Rid of Mice - Part One

Mice are carriers of diseases and germs. Getting rid of mice, and keeping them out, can be accomplished by various methods.

Discovering evidence that a mouse has invaded your home can be quite upsetting. Mice are mostly nocturnal, so they are not likely to be seen unless the infestation is severe. Mice often leave behind droppings in kitchen cabinets, pantries, drawers, and any other place they may have gone in search of food. It is important to close off the source of entry and eliminate any mice currently within the home.

Where there is one mouse, there is likely to be more. According to the website article "Controlling House Mice" published by the University of Missouri, a female mouse has between five and ten litters per year with about five or six babies in each litter. The young are capable of reproducing at the age of six weeks. A mouse infestation can easily get out of control if not dealt with as soon as it is recognized.

Keep Mice Out This Winter

It's cold outside and mice are looking for a warm place to go this winter. Now, mice do not migrate to Florida (unless they hitch a ride with a human snow bird, that is). So watch this video for a few tips on keeping mice out of your home this winter. Of course, you can always give Dave a call at 1-800-400-6009.
